John the Baptist gives us a model to show how a person who genuinely believes in Jesus will see his life and ministry. John has disciples, they have been following John, but some of them are frustrated that John is losing his influence while Jesus' popularity is growing. John's response is deep, rich, and beautiful. He reminds them that the ministry he had was there because it was given by God in the first place. And the very purpose of John's ministry was to point to Jesus. Now Jesus must increase, John must decrease. What a great statement of purpose, that Christ's influence and fame should grow while mine decreases.
