Joy

The Declaration of Independence calls for the rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The founding fathers insisted on the right for their citizens to pursue what made them happy. And for the past two hundred plus years, we have pursued happiness to the best of our abilities. We chase after people and money and stuff and self-esteem, anything that might make us feel happy, but for whatever reason, we cannot seem to find anything that lasts. This is because in our pursuit of happiness we have lost sight of what brings us joy (they are not the same thing). So many people who seem to be the happiest among us seem to have no lasting joy. That is because they are looking in the wrong place. Only the gospel can bring us real lasting joy.
