The Psalms of Ascent (Psalm 120-134) were a series of songs sung by the Hebrew people as they traveled in bands toward Jerusalem for the pilgrimage festivals. This means they were songs written and then gathered to help the people prepare for their celebration of worship at the Temple and in the city as they were reminded of God's great redemption and care. This song is a simple reminder, I need help and my help comes from the Lord. Too often we want to sing, Where does my help come from? My help comes from within, I have the resources, I can do it alone." But, it is the people who are needy and seek help that will find the strength to stand and the direction to keep moving from the God who never takes a nap.
