In any given moment in world history, the rulers and leaders who govern nations and empires seem absolute and all-powerful. They will assert their ultimate authority and demand full allegiance. Daniel interprets Nebuchadnezzar's dream of a great statue. The dream is a vision of a 90 feet tall and 9 feet wide statue that pictures the rise and fall of multiple world empires, including the Babylonian empire, as well as the Medo-Persian, Greek, and Roman Empires that were yet to come. In a vivid way through this dream, God gives a description of the next 500 years of history, defining the rise and fall of successive empires. But, in the end, there is a different type of King and Kingdom who will break apart the kingdoms of this world, judge them, and rule over all. The dream has predictions of several great kingdoms, all of which seem powerful and all important, until we realize that God is sovereign over all of them, and eventually all kings will bow to the True and Better King. As we live in this moment, we must remember that only one King will ultimately rule and only one Kingdom will endure forever.
