Red Letters: The Gospel and Being Judgmental

Aug 2, 2009 • Mike Hubbard • Series: Red Letters

Twenty years ago, the most popular Bible verse in the American culture was John 3:16. Today the most quoted and also most misused verse comes from our text for today, Matthew 7:1, "Judge not, that you be not judged." People like this verse, because they believe Jesus is agreeing with the postmodern world view that says the only absolute is that there are no absolutes. Elizabeth Elliot says concerning our culture, "The only sin left in our culture is to call something else a sin." Was this Jesus' intention, to tell his followers that they can never form a judgment about anything? Maybe the words of Jesus are a warning of something very dangerous to those of us who follow Jesus, something of which we need to be very aware.
