Our finances have an interesting role in life. Nothing exposes the source of our hope and the direction of our lives in a greater way than the way we pursue and spend our wealth. Throughout this wonderful letter, one of James' themes is an indictment on the rich in the church. He does this because he, like his brother Jesus, knows that economic success is one of the fastest ways to abandon our faith and exchange the glory of eternity for the rusting stuff of the here and now.
