Everybody in this story is awful. One of Jesus' best friends betrays him. Peter tries to kill a soldier, then flat out denies Jesus. The High Priest and religious leaders of the Jews hold an illegal trial where they reject and accuse Jesus. The story hinges on Jesus' words in verse 11 about the cup that the Father had given Him. The imagery of the cup is straight out of the Old Testament prophets. The big question we have to ask is, what is in the cup? The reason for that cup is on display in every possible way in this story. Every person deserves the cup except Christ, but only Jesus will drink the cup.
