It is probably the most identifiable religious icon in the world. People wear them around their necks, have pictures and images of them in their homes, and make the sign of it across their chest. But do we really know what the cross is all about? We are about to move into Mark's story of the last day of Jesus' life, an event called the passion of the Christ. In the last 24 hours of his life, several significant events happen that lead up to his unjust trial, and brutal death. We will find that the cross itself is not a beautiful thing, but on the cross Jesus accomplished more for us than we can ever understand. The atonement of Jesus has been compared to a multifaceted diamond that has many sides, and every angle reflects light and color in different and beautiful ways. As we journey through the story of the passion, we will look at many of these facets of the atonement and seek to answer the question, what did Jesus accomplish for us on the cross?
